The 2005 GBS-FM Dongie Awards
There used to be this site that was like a radio station, but you could add your favorite song to the playlist to basically force other people to listen to your favorite songs. It was a fun experiment that lasted several years and had a very tight community. On the weekends, the person who ran the station allowed listeners to hold their own one or two hour shows. If there was an open time slot, you could be your own radio DJ. It was a lot of fun, especially because we'd have anywhere from 30 to 50 people listening at a time. For some dumb reason, the owner of the site liked to call songs "dongs." Basically, he was a perpetual college student with the social skills and mind of a 3rd grader.
One year, since it was awards season and all with the Grammys, Emmys, etc. and because I was bored, I asked the group if they'd like to have their own award show. We set up polls for people to vote on the best DJ shows in certain categories. After winners were figured up, I put together this show! I asked the winners to send me an MP3 of their acceptance speech. I spliced them in, added a few bits, made it sound all regal, spoke like I was reading off cue cards, and presto! Instant award show! So, if you've got an hour to kill, and you like meta-humor that you probably won't get unless you were there, have a listen to the 2005 GBS-FM Dongie Awards!
Oh yeah, I met one of the guys from the site one weekend in March of 2005. He put together a really nice CD of this show for me complete with album art and everything. I shall treasure it always.
