I have tried my hand at Marion politics a few times. I don't think I'll be doing that anymore, though. Here are some short anecdotes about my awesome adventures into local politics! By the way, if you ever want to run, it's really easy. All you need are some signatures and about $40 (I forget what the filing fee is currently, but it's around that).
2009 - Ran for City Council President, Lost
Spencer Phelps - 1,930 Dave Edwards - 3,797
I ran for City Council President in 2009 as a Libertarian against a tax evading Democrat named Dave Edwards. Even though I busted my ass going door-to-door, spent over $1,000 while he spent nothing, and got dozens of yard sign placements from awesome people while he broke campaign law with his, I still lost by 66%. Some have said I lost because I couldn't convince voters that I was serious about doing the job if I got elected. I say it's a sad day when a city would rather have a serious tax evading, law breaker stay in office than someone who tells a few jokes now and then. There's an old saying in politics, though: "Youth and enthusiasm will be beaten by old age and cunning any day." Needless to say I'm a little bitter about the results, and I never plan to run for office again because of it. Here's the site I used for my campaign back in 2009.
Here are the fun radio commercials I made for this race.
2007 - Ran for Marion Township Trustee, Lost
Spencer Phelps - 1,183 William "Bill" McCaulley - 2,694 Dick Rasmussen - 3,773
I did this just for shits and giggles. I made some funny radio ads and didn't campaign at all just to see how many votes I could get. I also thought it was funny that I was running against a "Willy" and a "Dick." Maybe this contributed to my loss in 2009. Who knows? Anyways, here are the silly radio commercials I did for this stint in politics. (30-second mp3s)
2001 - Ran for Marion Township Trustee, Lost
(Top 2 won) Spencer Phelps - 1,374 Joseph Dawson - 2,538 Brad McGinniss - 2,663 Don Golden - 2,402 Richard Fredritz - 1,340
This was a kind of "serious but not serious" run. I was only 21 at the time, and I was running against four other men who were all above the age of 60! I didn't campaign at all for this, either. I just wanted to get on the ballot for fun and to see how many votes I could get if I didn't really try. Can't believe I beat one guy who was actually trying! This ended up getting me on the Marion County Republican Central/Executive Committee for a couple years, though. That was pretty neat.
